Hi, My name is Dave Stevenson and I created the Arctic Ice Lantern.
A few years ago I was at a party that had the sidewalk lined with some candles in ice. It was very cool. I later learned that the effect was simply balloons filled with water and frozen. I was hooked. However, I was not very successful at achieveing any kind of consistent luminary, and the balloons proved challenging to fill. I tried several other types of containers but was not inspired.
Then it came to me! I'll create my own mold, something very affordable so people can make dozens of Ice Lanterns at a very low cost. I had to do quite a bit of research into design and manufacturing (you see, I'm a stock broker), but eventually I was manufacturing them in Waconia, Minnesota.
It's been 8 years since the first Ice Lantern was sold and we are contunuing to grow. Last year over 8,000 Ice Lantern molds were sold, and we have added 3 new outlets in neighboring states. 2009 is shaping up to be our best year yet!
Please take time to read and follow the directions as to freezing times. I worked with the plastic supplier to find a durable plastic that would withstand the occasional solid freeze, but nothing is safe from "Mother Nature" so watch your freezing times.
Go to the 3 Easy Steps section for full instructions. In the tips and tricks section, you will find a PDF worksheet you can print to help you with successful freezing times. (or click here to download it.)
Have fun, and as a customer told me last year "Lets Cook Some Ice!!"
